From his earliest years Brysien Beer was extremely interested in music. His interest was fostered by family members and eventually at the age of 10 Brysien decided to play the violin. It took him quite a while to obtain a private teacher, but once he did his musical potential was evident. Through extensive study with Grand Rapids symphony musicians Collette Vandenberg and Christine Golden, as well as Professor Malcolm Brannen and Eminent American Violinist Dylana Jenson, Brysien Beer has developed into an extremely versatile performer. Throughout his academic career he has played with the Saint Cecilia Philharmonic, The Grand Valley State University Chamber Orchestra, The Montessori Orchestra and the Grand Rapids Community College Chamber Orchestra in many capacities, from section violinist to concertmaster. His other performance ensembles in reference to violin include Quatenus Strings, a Grand Rapids based String Quartet and a few jazz/blues quintets that he frequently plays with.
Realizing the importance of intellectual nourishment at a young age, Brysien decided to join the Grand Rapids League of Academic Games Program around the same time that he began playing violin. The League of Academic Games program provided a unique forum for conveying difficult scholastic concepts in creative and exciting ways. Unlike any other gifted and talented program, Academic Games increases knowledge in a wide variety of academic subject areas, while simultaneously enhancing cognitive abilities such as creative problem solving and critical thinking skills. This gave Brysien all the academic stimulation he needed. In 2002 Brysien won his first national award in mathematics. He went on to win numerous team and individual championships in mathematics, linguistics, propaganda, set theory and U.S history all culminating with the “2008 Outstanding Sr. Award” and induction onto “The Greatest Players Of The 20th Century And Beyond” wall of fame. These are the most prestigious honors bestowed upon a competitor by the Academic Games Leagues Of America. Following his belief of passing on the knowledge to the next generation, Brysien coached his first Academic Games Team to State and National Championships in Linguistics, Mathematics, Propaganda and U.S History during the 2008-2009 academic year.
Through his need to become a well-rounded musician, Brysien has discovered and developed many other gifts. Photography, Animal Husbandry, Vocal Performance, Teaching, Culinary Arts, and Genetic Observation are just a few of the equally important skills that have allowed Brysien to become known as a multifaceted and versatile professional with no boundaries.
